Tender Loving Care Disability Services (TLC) is proud to announce its participation in the Big Blue Table initiative, aimed at raising awareness and breaking the stigma around mental health.
Held on October 16, 2024, the event was hosted by Maria Binny, National Business Development Manager at TLC Disability Services, alongside Erica Dilworth. The gathering created an inviting and supportive space for colleagues, friends, and industry peers to have honest and meaningful conversations about mental health.
The Big Blue Table is an initiative by Beyond Blue designed to encourage people to connect over a meal while discussing mental health topics. By hosting these events, organisations and individuals help raise funds for Beyond Blue’s 24/7 Support Service, which provides vital assistance to those affected by anxiety, depression, and suicide.
At the TLC-hosted Big Blue Table, participants were provided with conversation starters, part of the free host kits given to all registered hosts. These resources help ease the often difficult task of discussing mental health by offering a safe and structured way to start meaningful conversations.
The event featured discussions about the importance of mental health support in the workplace, and attendees, with their courage and openness, shared their personal experiences, creating an atmosphere of vulnerability and openness that inspired us all.
Maria Binny described the event as a space where vulnerability and openness were prioritised. She shared in a social media post:
“Too often we hear the words’ tough it out’ and keep our struggles hidden, but alongside Erica, we wanted to change that narrative. Yesterday, we focused on vulnerability, openness, and mutual support. It wasn’t just about talking; it was about listening and letting each other know that it’s okay to not have all the answers.”
Participants expressed their gratitude for the opportunity to be part of this transformative event:
These powerful testimonials reflect the essence of the Big Blue Table—connecting through conversation and mutual support, and the profound impact it has on our community. It’s a testament to the fact that we are all part of a larger movement towards mental health awareness and support.
TLC Disability Services is committed to creating spaces where mental health is prioritised and openly discussed without fear of judgment. Events like the Big Blue Table foster understanding and compassion among individuals and communities. Maria further highlighted the significance of these conversations, stating:
“It’s clear that there’s a need for more conversations like this, and I’m committed to continuing to create spaces where mental health is a priority and a safe space is the norm.”
All funds raised through Big Blue Table events support Beyond Blue’s 24/7 Support Service, which provides immediate and ongoing support to individuals struggling with mental health issues. This service includes a helpline, online chat support, and resources for self-help and professional assistance.
By hosting and participating in these events, TLC Disability Services and its community contribute to ensuring that this vital support is available when needed.
Following the success of this Big Blue Table event, TLC Disability Services is looking forward to continuing its advocacy for mental health awareness.
As an organisation dedicated to the well-being of its clients and team, TLC is committed to breaking down the barriers that prevent open conversations about mental health within its own walls and across the industry. This ongoing commitment should reassure you that there is hope for a future where mental health is openly discussed and supported.
